Maligned for Their Peacefulness

March 2, 2010 Leave a comment

It can’t be said more bluntly that this:

But we must, as common sense American citizens, understand that those who embrace Islam come from a religious background which has carried its medieval founder’s violent principles, as well as his benign ones, forward into our modern era.

There are currently 7 million of these scary, violence worshiping “aliens” in the United States… except for the inconvenient fact that they are not actually violent. In fact it’s only because of the silence of their peacefulness that they are able to be maligned by those frightened of the other.

To Answer the Question, Yes It’s a Moral Failure

February 27, 2010 1 comment

Responding to an interview with Margaret Regan on NPR, James Tyler asks,

Wait – so it’s a moral failure of the United States that people are dying trying to enter our country illegally? That should stun the average listener/reader (though I doubt it stunned many NPR listeners). Of course, this segment on NPR was completely objective and had no liberal bias whatsoever… maybe that’s what I’m forgetting.

Yes, it is a moral failure. When people are dying, it’s not a requirement that they be certified American citizens for their deaths to matter.

Perspective on the Immigrant Experience

February 22, 2010 Leave a comment

Maybe I’m on a song kick, but I was recently reminded of a song that provides an view of U.S. immigration policy from the other side: Carlos Santana’s “Migra”.

People people let’s start together
Let’s do it right now
People people let’s love one another
I know we know how

Me necesitas tu a mi mas y mas que yo a ti
Me necesitas tu a mi mas y mas que yo a ti
Me necesitas tu a mi mas y mas que yo a ti
Me necesitas tu a mi mas y mas que yo a ti

Migra Migra pinche Migra dejame en pas

People people let’s love one another
I know we know how

I particularly appreciate the blending of social protest with a plea for social unity. The English translations of each repeated lines are (Migra is slang for the INS and Border Patrol):

Migra, Migra, worthless Migra, leave me in peace
I see malice in your eyes, contempt in your heart
It is time to remember we are all one voice
Embrace the concept that we come from the same voice
You need me more than I need you

Your thoughts?

What Limited Government Looks Like

February 9, 2010 Leave a comment

The Tea Party movement has the goal of limiting the role of government to the greatest extent possible. Interestingly enough we already have a picture of what it looks like to live under a limited government. They’re standing in convenience store parking lots waiting for work on any given morning.
