Driving While Hispanic

So, Arizona. Where to start? Police in Arizona are now required to arrest someone if there is reasonable suspicion the person is an illegal immigrant (and anyone who doesn’t admit what that phrase actually means is lying) if that person cannot prove their status. Concerns that this would lead to arrests of Hispanic citizens were dismissed as hyperbole, but guess what? It’s already happened. Read more…

Unheard Optimism

They are fighting against serious poverty. Thirty-nine percent are raising a family on less than $15,000 a year. And they are among the hardest hit by the recession. But they are very optimistic about this country. Their optimism isn’t heard by many since they primarily speak Spanish and there are more than a few people who hate them and don’t want them here.

It’s happenings like this that restore my faith that there are still people calling themselves Christians who have not forgotten the command in Leviticus 25 to:

If one of your countrymen becomes poor and is unable to support himself among you, help him as you would an alien or a temporary resident, so he can continue to live among you. [emphasis added]
